WHCL Certified video adapter driver not carried over when upgraded to Windows 8

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have Windows 7 installed on your computer.
  • You have installed a WHCL certificated video adapter driver.
  • You upgrade the computer to Windows 8.

In this scenario, after you complete the upgrade you will notice that the display adapter may be defaulted to the inbox “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter” video driver or the Hardware Vendors inbox driver. 

You will also note that there is no reference of the WHCL video adapter driver or software installation listed when viewing “Programs and Features” from the Control Panel when the video adapter is not carried over.

Resolution

To work around this issue and successfully install the WHCL video adapter driver, use one of the methods listed below.


Method 1: Install video driver using manufactures installation package:

Contact the manufacturer of the device or access their support web site to download the WHCL video driver.  If the driver uses a setup or installation program, run the program to install the driver. For more information about how to do this, review the video driver installation documentation or contact the driver manufacturer.

Method 2: Let Windows Search for the video driver from the Internet:
  1. Open the Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Display.
  2. Click Change Display Settings from the left hand pane.
  3. Click Advanced Settings at the bottom of “Change the appearance of your display”.
  4. Click the Properties button under Adapter Type.
  5. Click the Driver Tab and then click Update Driver.
  6. Click “Search automatically for updated driver software”, to download and install driver from the Internet.
  7. Continue with the driver install until completed.
  8. Restart the computer if promoted for the changes to take effect.

Method 3: Install driver using the manufactures video driver INF file
  1. Contact the manufacturer of the device or access their support web site to download the WHCL video driver.
  2. Extract the contents of the driver into a folder on the computer.
  3. Open the Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Display. 
  4. Click Change Display Settings from the left hand pane.
  5. Click Advanced Settings at the bottom of “Change the appearance of your display”.  
  6. Click the Properties button under Adapter Type.
  7. Click the Driver Tab and then click Update Driver.
  8. Select “Browse my computer for driver software’, browse to and select the folder where the driver was extracted to.
  9. Locate and select the installation INF file for the video driver and click next.
  10. Continue with the installation prompts and then click Finish.
  11. Restart the computer if prompted for the changes to take effect.
