Internet Explorer 8 freezes when you browse a website that is from a less privileged zone on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You select Prompt for the Websites in less privileged web content zone can navigate into this zone option in Internet Explorer 8.
  • You browse a website that is from a less privileged web content zone by using Internet Explorer 8.
In this scenario, Internet Explorer 8 freezes. Additionally, you cannot exit Internet Explorer 8.

Notes
  • The expected behavior is that the webpage you try to view is redirected to the security zone configured in Internet Explorer 8.
  • This issue does not occur if you select Enable for the Websites in less privileged web content zone can navigate into this zone option in Internet Explorer 8.
  • This issue does not occur if you select Enable Protected Mode in the Internet Options dialog box in Internet Explorer 8.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Let me fix it myself

After apply this hotfix, you must create a registry key before you restart the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start
    , type regedit in the Search programs and files box, and then press ENTER.
    If you are prompted for an administrator password, type the password. If you are prompted for confirmation, provide confirmation.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey accordingly:
    1. For all supported x86-based versions of Windows 7:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_CROSS_IL_REDIRECT_KB2737468
    2. For all supported x64-based versions of Windows 7 and of Windows Server 2008 R2 and IA-64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_CROSS_IL_REDIRECT_KB2737468
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type Iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click Iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
