Spoolsv.exe process crashes when you select the "Print to File" option on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You add some shared printers to a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based print server.
  • You remove one of the printers from the print server.
  • You configure a computer to spool a print job to a file port by selecting the�Print to File�option. �
In this scenario, the Print Spooler (Spoolsv.exe) process crashes. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Cause

This issue is caused by an access violation that occurs in the Spoolsv.exe process. When you remove a printer from the print server, the INIPRINTER instance is deleted. However, the reference instance of the INIPRINTER instance in the INIPORT data structure�is not deleted. Therefore, when the computer tries to assign a print job to a file port, an access violation occurs.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
