Summary

When you view an Instant Messaging log on an Exchange 2000 server, the time that is referenced for each event is different than your local time; the time is the difference between your time zone and Greenwich mean time.

More information

Instant Messenger is an Internet Server Application Programming Interface (ISAPI) extension that runs in the Inetinfo.exe service, (the process in Internet Information Services (IIS) for the IIS Administrator service), and therefore logs time like IIS does. IIS logs all of its events in Greenwich mean time (for example, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) logs are in Greenwich mean time).

Also, Instant Messenger does not run as its own service in the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) because it is an ISAPI extension of the Inetinfo.exe service.

You can configure the date and time on your server so that the time in the Instant Messenger logs match the times on the server. To do this, change the time zone on your local computer to Greenwich mean time, and then set the display time to your local time (note that this procedure also changes the dates and times for all IIS logs on the server):
1.Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click Date/Time.
3.On the Time Zone tab, change the time zone setting to (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London, and then click Apply.
4.On the Date & Time tab, change the date and time setting to the date and time in your local time zone.
