Opening a link from within the Dashboard application may cause it to terminate unexpectedly

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • A computer is running Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 with a non-English language chosen during install (Russian, for example).
  • Using a Remote Desktop Connection you connect to the server and launch the Dashboard application from the shortcut on the desktop.
  • You click on one of the available links on the right-hand pane of the Dashboard.

In this scenario, after clicking on the link and then "Yes" to open the default Internet browser, the Dashboard application will close unexpectedly. In addition you may also notice an Event ID 7031 is logged in Windows Event Viewer, referencing an unexpected termination of Dashboard.exe.

Note: The issue will not occur when launching the Dashboard from the client using the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 connection software.

Cause

This is a known issue where the language selected is applied also to the system account.

Resolution

To workaround this issue all regional and language settings must first be reverted to English for both the system and user accounts. Then, only the logged on user account should be changed to the desired language. To complete these actions, follow the steps below.


To change all language settings back to English:
  1. Open Control Panel and select the "Region and Language" applet.
  2. From the Formats tab, under Format select English (United States).
  3. Select the “Keyboards and Languages” tab.
  4. Under “Display language”, select English (United States) and click Apply. Do not log off if prompted to do so.
  5. Select the Administrative tab and click on the "Copy settings" button.
  6. Select the check box next to “Welcome screen and system accounts”.
  7. Click OK to accept the changes.
  8. Reboot the server when prompted for the changes to take effect.

To change only the Current User to desired language:
  1. Open Control Panel and select the "Region and Language" applet.
  2. From the Formats tab, under Format select the desired language.
  3. Select the “Keyboards and Languages” tab.
  4. Under “Display language”, select the desired language and click Apply. Do not log off if prompted to do so.
  5. If all new users on the server should If required to use the same language for new users click the Administrative tab and click “Copy settings…’ under “Welcome screen and new user accounts” 
  6. Select the check box next to “New user accounts”, DO NOT select “Welcome screen and system account”
  7. Click OK to accept the changes
  8. Reboot the server when prompted for the changes to take effect.
