Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Mail Merge fails on large marketing lists

Symptoms

When attempting to perform a mail merge in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 on a large amount of records, such as a large group of Contacts in a Marketing List, Microsoft Office Word prematurely closes after clicking 'OK' in the Mail Merge Recipients window.

Cause

Microsoft Office Word uses an internal queue to handle incoming mail merge items. However, when this queue becomes overloaded, it can cause Word to crash unexpectedly.

Resolution

Increase the UserPostMessageLimit registry entry on the machine performing the mail merge.

  1. Open the Registry Editor
  2. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows
  3. Double-click the USERPostMessageLimit registry entry and change the value from 10000 to 20000
  4. Close Regedit
  5. Restart the machine
