Symptoms

When you execute a planning by using a starting date that equals or is minus one day from the forecast period in Microsoft Dynamics NAV, the system suggests too much inventory by using the planning parameters. Therefore, you receive more inventory level than that is defined in the maximum quantity. The planning parameters include reorder point, safety stock and maximum quantity.

This problem occurs in the following products:
  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 R2
  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 Service Pack 1

Cause

This problem occurs because of the prior code changes. The quantity of supply for safety stock quantity demand could be increased. However, the MaintainProjectedInv function skips that supply and the ProjectedInventory value is calculated incorrectly.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 service pack or the next Microsoft Dynamics NAV version that contains this hotfix.

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Technical Support Professional for Microsoft Dynamics and related products determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

Code changes

Note Always test code fixes in a controlled environment before you apply the fixes to your production computers.

To resolve this problem, change the code in the PlanItem function in the codeunit (99000854) as follows:

Existing code

...

// Delete the following lines.
IF IncreaseQtyToMeetDemand(Supply,Demand."Untracked Quantity" - Supply."Untracked Quantity") THEN
NextState := NextState::CloseDemand
ELSE
// End of the deleted lines.

NextState := NextState::CloseSupply;
...

Replacement code

...

// Add the following lines.
IF IncreaseQtyToMeetDemand(Supply,Demand."Untracked Quantity" - Supply."Untracked Quantity") THEN BEGIN
NextState := NextState::CloseDemand;
// initial Safety Stock can be changed to normal, if we can increase qty for normal demand
IF (Supply."Order Relation" = Supply."Order Relation"::"Safety Stock") AND
(Demand."Order Relation" = Demand."Order Relation"::Normal)
THEN BEGIN // add a new line
Supply."Order Relation" := Supply."Order Relation"::Normal;
LastProjectedInventory -= TempSKU."Safety Stock Quantity";
END;
END ELSE
// End of the added lines.

NextState := NextState::CloseSupply;
...

Prerequisites

You must have one of the following products installed to apply this hotfix:
  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 R2
  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Service Pack 1
  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0 Service Pack 1
