Cause

This issue can occur if Exchange Server 5.5 is running on a Microsoft Windows 2000 domain controller that is acting as a global catalog server. You cannot install Exchange Server 5.5 onto a Windows 2000 global catalog server if Exchange 2000 is introduced on any server in the forest.

Workaround

To resolve this issue, move the global catalog server from the Exchange Server 5.5-based computer to another domain controller in the same domain:
  1. Bring up another domain controller in this domain.
  2. Start the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in and navigate to Sites\Sitename\Servers\Servername\NTDS Settings.
  3. Right-click the setting, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the General tab, and then click to select the Global catalog check box to assign the role of global catalog to this server.
  5. Allow sufficient time for the account and schema information to be replicated to the new global catalog server.
  6. Restart this server.
  7. On the computer that is running Exchange Server 5.5, start the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in and navigate to Sites\Sitename\Servers\Servername\NTDS Settings.
  8. Right-click the setting, and then click Properties.
  9. Click the General tab, and then click to clear the Global catalog check box.
  10. Restart the Exchange Server 5.5-based computer.
