Windows Media Player HTTP streaming proxy settings are not applied to a Windows client computer

Symptoms

When you apply Group Policy settings on a client computer for Windows Media Player 12, the HTTP streaming proxy settings are not applied.

Cause

This problem occurs because the HTTP streaming proxy settings do not exist in the ProxySettings subkey in the registry.

By default, the HTTP streaming proxy settings should exist in the following registry location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\ProxySettings

Additionally, the Group Policy settings are saved to the following location in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsMediaPlayer\Protocols

Windows Media Player loads the streaming proxy settings from the registry and enumerates the list of protocols. If the HTTP key does not exist, the Group Policy settings do not take effect.

Workaround

To work around this problem, create an HTTP key under the following registry location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\ProxySettings

This lets Windows Media Player enumerate HTTP. This then enables the Group Policy settings to take effect.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
