NFS file locks in Windows Server 2008 R2 based failover clusters

Symptoms

In a Windows Server 2008 R2 based failover cluster environment, NFS file locks do not survive the NFS resource failover.

Cause

In the event of node failover or movement of NFS resources to the other nodes in the cluster, the Server for NFS driver does not retain any locking information when the NFS resources comes back online. In the process, NFS clients keep holding the file locks they acquired from the initial node.

  1. Notifications (SM_NOTIFY) are sent to the client to attempt lock recovery when a share is taken offline and the lock notifications are only sent using the server hostname and none of the cluster resource network names.
  2. Notifications are not sent when a cluster resource is brought online on a new node.

Resolution

This is a known problem with Server for NFS component in Windows Server 2008 R2. There are no known workarounds.
