An InvalidOperationException occurs in Internet Information Services 8 Express RC

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You are using the Internet Information Services (IIS) 8.0 Express Release Candidate (RC) version to develop a web application on Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012. The web application is based on the .NET Framework versions 3.5 or earlier. When you try to view an ASP.net web page, an exception similar to the following may occur:

[InvalidOperationException: Failed to map the path '/App_GlobalResources/'.]

This problem does not occur if the web application is based on the .NET Framework 4, nor if IIS 8 Express is installed on a computer running an operating system earlier than Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

Cause

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem with the Release Candidate (RC) of IIS 8 Express.

Resolution

To resolve this problem choose one of the following options:

Install the full version of Internet Information Services (IIS) 8.0 on the computer.

OR
If you do not want to install the full version of IIS 8.0, you can alternately install just the IIS Management Console feature of IIS 8.0.
