KDC cannot process an S4U2Self ticket request on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You map a client certificate to a user account in order to control access to resources on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The client certificate does not have a user principal name (UPN).
  • You perform a Kerberos Service for User (S4U) logon on a client computer to log on to an application by using the account.
  • The credential that is used in the logon session is a certificate credential.
  • Another application on the client computer requests a Service for User to Self (S4U2Self) ticket by using the credential.
In this scenario, the Key Distribution Center (KDC) cannot process the request.

For example, assume that you use Microsoft SQL Server as the database for an application that is running on Internet Information Services (IIS) 7. When delegation from the second application to SQL Server fails, you receive the following error message:
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.
Notes
  • The second application accesses the client logon session information by duplicating handle or by using an S4UProxy.
  • The request for a new S4U2Self ticket is sent in the following scenarios:
    • A ticket expires.
    • Two IIS application pools share one logon session. The second application pool that uses the logon session requests an S4U2Self ticket.

Cause

This issue occurs because the mapped username is not updated in the logon session after you perform the S4U logon.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes
Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
