"Unable to execute the task" error when you try to create a retention policy tag that has the "Move to Archive" action

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Exchange Server 2010.
  • You create a retention policy tag (RPT).
  • The RPT has the "Move to Archive" tag.
In this scenario, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed.
Elapsed time: 00:00:00
archive "Inbox"
Failed
Error:
Unable to execute the task, reason: MoveToArchive can only be applied to tags of type default ('All'), Personal or RecoverableItems.

Exchange Management Shell command attempted:

However, you can create a retention policy tag that has a different action and then change the action to the "Move to Archive" action. For example, you can create a retention policy tag that has the "Permanently Delete" action and then change the action to "Move to Archive."�

Cause

This issue occurs because the "Move to Archive" action is not supported for an RPT. The "Move to Archive" action is available only for a default policy tag (DPT) or a personal tag.

Note�You can create an RPT that has a different action and then change the action to the "Move to Archive" action. However, this configuration is not supported.

Resolution

To prevent this issue, do not create an RPT that has the "Move to Archive" action. Additionally, do not create an RPT that has a different action and then change the action to the "Move to Archive" action.

Note If you created an RPT and then change the action to the "Move to Archive" action, revert to the original action, or delete the RPT.
