Windows Media Player 12 displays scrambled DVD content in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Assume that you play certain DVDs in Windows Media Player 12 on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. However, Windows Media Player displays scrambled content instead of the expected video content.

MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component.
