"STATUS_SHARING_VIOLATION" error message when you try to open a highly fragmented file on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a highly fragmented file on a computer that is running Window 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You open the file by using the IO_OPEN_PAGING_FILE flag, and then you close the file.
  • You try to open the file again without the IO_OPEN_PAGING_FILE flag.
In this scenario, the NTFS file system does not open the file. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
STATUS_SHARING_VIOLATION

Note
The problem also occurs when you open a highly fragmented file without the IO_OPEN_PAGING_FILE flag, and then you try to reopen the file by using the IO_OPEN_PAGING_FILE flag.

Cause

This issue occurs because the attribute list of a highly fragmented file that uses a file control block (FCB) is not cleared correctly when the file is closed.
