Screen may be dim or blank on resume from sleep or hibernation on notebook systems

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running Windows 7 on a notebook computer.
  • Windows starts to enter sleep (S3) or hibernation (S4) mode due to system inactivity or user initiation.
  • You close the lid of the notebook before the system has finished transitioning to sleep or hibernation mode.
  • Later, you wake the system.

In this scenario, when you open the lid of your notebook, the screen may be blank or dim. If you try to change the screen brightness using the slider in the Control Panel Power Options applet, it has no effect.

Cause

This is a known issue with Windows 7.

Resolution

If you close and reopen the lid of the notebook, the screen will return to its original brightness. In addition, if you let the system completely go to sleep or hibernation before you close the lid, the problem will not occur.
