Splwow64 process crashes when you try to print an Adobe document in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Assume that you try to print an Adobe document that uses certain fonts by using the Microsoft XPS Document Writer (MXDW) driver on a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer. In this situation, the Splwow64 process crashes.

Note This issue also occurs when you use an XPS-based print driver or when you use the Terminal Services Easy Print Printer Driver. These drivers rely on XPS or XPS Document Writer.

Cause

This issue is caused by an error in MXDW that occurs when MXDW reverses Format 4 cmap tables.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:

MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component.
