View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you use the Windows Server Backup feature to successfully back up a Microsoft Exchange Server database on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer, the following events are not logged in the event log:

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Date: time and date
Event ID: 4
Task Category: None
Level: Information
Keywords:
User: SYSTEM
Computer: computer name
Description:
The backup operation has finished successfully.

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Date: time and date
Event ID: 14
Task Category: None
Level: Information
Keywords:
User: SYSTEM
Computer: computer name
Description:
The backup operation has completed.

Note The event ID 4 and event ID 14 events are logged correctly when you back up a small database, such as a 2 gigabyte (GB) or 3 GB database.

Cause

This issue occurs because the backup utility sends too much data to the Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) buffer. Therefore, the BACKUP_SUCCESS_EVENT events are dropped.
