Docking station devices may fail to start if a Windows 7 tablet is quickly undocked and docked

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows 7 tablet with a docking station.
  • You undock the tablet and then in quick succession re-dock it again.

In this scenario, integrated devices in the docking station may fail to start. In addition, Device Manager may report an Error Code 10 for those affected devices.

Cause

An Error Code 10 indicates that the device cannot start.

When a tablet is undocked from a docking station, the integrated docking station devices will be removed from Windows. If the tablet is docked again while the devices are in the process of being removed, you may run into an enumeration issue where Windows is trying to start a device that is in the process of being removed. This can cause the enumeration of devices being stopped, removed, added or started to be out of sync and leave the device in a disabled state.

Resolution

When this occurs, undock the tablet and then dock it again. Windows Plug and Play Manager will clear the error condition and enumerate the devices properly.
