Slow performance when you copy files to a file server from a virtual machine that is running Windows XP Mode on a Windows 7-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you run a Windows XP Mode virtual machine in Shared Networking mode on a Windows 7-based computer. When you try to copy a file from the Windows XP Mode virtual machine to a file server, the file transfer speed is slow. Specifically, the file transfer speed is slower than the transfer speed when the computer is not running Windows XP Mode or when Windows XP Mode is not running in Shared Networking mode.

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows Virtual PC does not return a "TCP Windows update" ACK response to the guest operating system when Virtual PC successfully sends data to the remote host. Therefore, the guest operating system waits for 5 seconds before it sends the next packet.
