VSS operations may fail on a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 system that has the App-V client installed

Symptoms

You may experience the following issues on a system that has the Application Virtualization (App-V) client installed:

Issue 1

When you run the vssadmin list shadowstorage, vssadmin list volumes or vssadmin list shadows commands, the following error occurs:

Error: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified command.

Issue 2

A physical to virtual (P2V) conversion using System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (SCVMM) fails during ‘Scan System’ with the following error:

VMM does not have appropriate permissions to access the resource on the server.domain.com server.
Ensure that Virtual Machine Manager has the appropriate rights to perform this action.

Issue 3

Hyper-V virtual machines that have the App-V client installed will be placed in a “Saved State” during backup operations.

When these issues occur, the following events will be logged in the Application event log:

Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: VSS was denied access to the root of volume \\?\Volume{edec3633-6714-11e1-823e-001372e3804b}\. Denying administrators from accessing volume roots can cause many unexpected failures, and will prevent VSS from functioning properly.  Check security on the volume, and try the operation again.

Cause

The VSS operations fail because VSS doesn’t support the App-V virtual drive which is a non-NTFS volume.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following hotfix:

2738812 The "vssadmin list shadowstorage" command fails after you install the App-V client on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer
