FIX: Slow performance when you refresh a Team Foundation Server 2010 work list in an Excel worksheet

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You open a Microsoft Office Excel worksheet that connects to a Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 (TFS 2010) server.
  • You manage a TFS 2010 work item list in the worksheet.
  • The worksheet contains a macro or Automation.
  • You refresh the work item list.
In this scenario, you might experience slow performance.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error in the add-in for the TFS work item. When you refresh the TFS work item list, the add-in for the TFS work item sorts the Excel rows by their associated work item IDs. When the add-in for the work item sorts the corresponding rows, it assigns a temporary sorting value to the ID column of each row, one at a time. In this case, the add-in for the work item makes calls to a particular Excel COM API many times. Therefore, the recalculation operation of the worksheet is triggered, and the worksheet may be repainted.
