"The parameter is incorrect" error message when you run WinSAT in Windows 7

Symptoms

When you run the winsat.exe disk command on a computer that is running Windows 7, and filter drivers hook the DeviceIoControl function, you receive the following error message:
Failed to properly assess the disk. The parameter is incorrect.

Cause

This issue occurs because the async case is not handled when the Windows System Assessment Tool (WinSAT) tries to obtain the attributes of the raw drive by using the DeviceIoControl function.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
