Symptoms

The System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager service crashes when refreshing a Brocade Load Balancer VIP.

In the VMM trace, the following errors are logged:

[4700] 125C.114C::10/03-21:57:43.604#04:Catalog.cs(621): !!! System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ProtocolName', table 'RTMTP.dbo.tbl_NetMan_LoadBalancerVIP'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
[4700] The statement has been terminated. [4700] The statement has been terminated.

Cause

This can occur if the Brocade Load Balancer VIP only has the default protocol configured. The Brocade provider supplies NULL values for the protocol in a VIP during the refresh when only the default protocol is configured, thus causing a SQL VMM database exception.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, define a protocol when creating a VIP in the Brocade Load Balancer.
