XL2000: Server Application Cannot Be Found When You Open Embedded Excel Object

Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel 2000, when you try to edit or open an embedded Excel object, you receive the following error message:
The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

Cause

This error message occurs when the embedded object was created from a Microsoft Excel 97 workbook, and the active worksheet in the Excel object contains an ActiveX ComboBox.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this problem, delete the code stubs for the ComboBox. That is, delete macros that contain only a Sub statement and an End Sub statement.
