"226 Transfer complete" message when you run the ls or dir command against a file that does not exist in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft FTP Service 7.5 on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.�
  • You install the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 2383827 on the computer. Or, you install Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 or for Windows Server 2008 R2 on the computer.
  • You run the ls or dir command to list a specific file that does not exist on the FTP server.
In this scenario, you receive the following message:
226 Transfer complete
This is the message that you expect to receive if the file exists. When the file does not exist, you expect to receive the following message:
550-The system cannot find the file specified
Note If you run the ls or dir command together with a wildcard, you receive the "226 Transfer complete" message whether the file exists or not.

This issue occurs because the hotfix that is described in KB 2383827 contains a regression.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
