FIX: Local profile folder is not created when you configure an application pool identity to use an account that uses the "domain\user" format in IIS 7.0 or in IIS 7.5

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure the identity of an application pool to use an account on a computer that has Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 or Microsoft IIS 7.5 installed.
  • The account uses the "domain\user" format, and the Load User Profile option is set to true in the advanced settings of the application pool.
  • The user account has never been used to log on to this computer. Therefore, the user's profile directory was not created in Drive:\users.
  • A client request is sent to a site that is hosted by the server running IIS. 
In this scenario, no local profile folder is created for the custom identity that you configured for the application pool.

Note When this issue occurs, a temporary folder that is named TEMP is created in Drive:\Users, and this temporary folder is deleted when the IIS worker process (W3wp.exe) exits.

Cause

The issue occurs because IIS passes a "domain\user" formatted value into the LoadUserProfile API, and this API attempts to create the user profile folder. However, the "domain\user" format is not a valid format for the folder name. Therefore, the folder creation attempt fails, and the issue that is described in "Symptoms" section occurs.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must have IIS 7.0 or IIS 7.5 installed to apply this hotfix. This hotfix can be installed on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer if IIS is running when you apply this hotfix.
