FIX: A Windows Embedded Compact 7-based device that has a valid IP address sends a DHCP discover message when it connects to the network

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Embedded Compact 7-based device that connects to a network.
  • The device is assigned a valid IP address by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. The DHCP server is configured not to send its default gateway.
  • You disconnect the device from the network and then reconnect the device to the same network.

In this scenario, the device sends a DHCP discovery message instead of a DHCP request message to the DHCP server. Additionally, a full DORA (Discovery, Offer, Request, Acknowledgment) DHCP process occurs.

Cause

This issue occurs because the device tries to ping the default gateway when it reconnects to the network. When the default gateway is not configured on the subnet or is inaccessible, the device responds as if the subnet is changed and therefore forces the sending of a DHCP discovery message.
