ArgumentNullException exception is thrown when you use the BinaryMessageEncoder class to serialize a typed dataset object between a .NET Framework 3.5-based WCF client application and a WCF server

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use the BinaryMessageEncoder class to serialize a typed dataset object between a .NET Framework 3.5-based Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) client application and a WCF server on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You request a dataset from the WCF service, and then you change the dataset in the WCF client. 
  • You pass the dataset back to the WCF service.
In this scenario, a System.ArgumentNullException exception is thrown. Additionally, you receive the following exception message:
Exception Type: System.ArgumentNullException

Message: Key cannot be null.

Parameter name: key

TargerSite: System.Object get_Item(System.Object)

Cause

This issue occurs because the XML output that is produced by the BinaryMessageEncoder class does not perform inline closing of an XML element tag. This causes the System.Data.XMLDiffLoader.ProcessDiffs method to try to access a null element in a hash table.

Hotfix information

To apply this hotfix, you must have the .NET Framework 3.5.1 installed.
