Summary

A Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) tool is available for the following versions of Windows Small Business Server (SBS):
  • Windows Small Business Server 2011
  • Windows Small Business Server 2008
  • Windows Small Business Server 2003
To help maintain the health of your small business network, we recommend that you run a BPA scan after you install your server, and regularly run a scan as part of your routine maintenance schedule. The BPA tool examines a server that is running Windows Small Business Server and that collects configuration information from many sources. The collected information is analyzed and verified by the BPA tool. After the tool collects and analyzes the information, it generates a list of issues, ordered by severity. For each issue, the tool provides descriptions of the problem and of discusses how you can fix the issue.

Instructions specific to SBS 2011 BPA

To install Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer 2.0

Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer 2.0 (MBCA 2.0) must be installed on the server and on any other computer from which you may start a BPA scan. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the following Microsoft Download Center website:
  2. Download the MBCA_Setup64.msi installation file. You can save the file to the computer, or to a removable storage device (such as a USB flash drive) or storage media (such as a CD).
  3. On the server or a computer that you will use to run the Microsoft Windows SBS 2011 BPA, locate and then double-click the installation file.
  4. Follow the instructions in the Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer 2.0 Wizard to complete the installation.

To install Microsoft Windows SBS 2011 BPA on the server

  1. If you have not done so already, follow the previous instructions to install MBCA 2.0.
  2. Visit the following Windows Download Center website:
  3. Download the BPASetup.msi file, and save it to a location on the server that you want to scan.
  4. On the server that you want to scan, locate and then double-click the setup file.
  5. On the "Prepare to install the Microsoft Windows SBS 2011 Best Practices Analyzer" page of the setup wizard, you are presented with the following options:
    • Enable remote BPA scan of this server: This option enables network administrators to initiate a BPA scan while they are logged on to the server from a remote computer. This option is selected by default. Click to clear this option if you do not want to scan the server from a remote computer.

      Note If you do not select the Enable remote BPA scan on this server option, you cannot run a BPA scan from another computer. For more information about how to enable or disable remote scans after you install Microsoft Windows SBS 2011 BPA, see the "Additional technical information" section of this article.
    • Integrate Microsoft Windows SBS 2011 BPA scan results into the Windows SBS Console: When you select this option, a BPA scan is run on the server every day, and the scan results appear in the "Other Alerts" section of the Windows SBS Console. This option is selected by default. Click to clear this option if you do not want to integrate the BPA scan results into the Windows SBS Console.
  6. Follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the setup.
You can run a Microsoft Windows SBS 2011 BPA scan on a local or remote server.

To run a Microsoft Windows SBS 2011 BPA scan on a local server

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Server Solutions BPA.
  2. Right-click Windows Server Solutions Best Practices Analyzer 1.0, and then click Run as administrator.
  3. On the MBCA 2.0 page, click Windows Server Solutions Best Practices Analyzer in the Select a product list.

  4. Click Start Scan.

To run a Microsoft Windows SBS 2011 BPA scan on a remote server

  1. If you have not already done so, follow the previous instructions to install MBCA 2.0 on the computer from which you will run a BPA scan.
  2. Log on to the computer from which you will run the BPA scan.
  3. Click Start, and then click Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer 2.0.
  4. On the Home page of the MBCA, click Connect to Another Computer.

  5. In the Connect to Another Computer dialog box, select Another computer, and then type the name or the IP address of the remote server that you want to scan.

  6. Select Connect as another user, and then click Set User.
  7. In the Windows Security dialog box, type the authentication information for a user account that has Network Administrator permissions for the server that you want to scan. Then, click OK.
  8. After you connect to the server, go to the MBCA home page, and then select Windows Small Business Server 2011 BPA in the Select a product list.

  9. Click Start Scan.
