If a virtual directory is created on a front-end (proxy) server that is running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and that is associated with a public folder that is located on a back-end (information store) Exchange 2000 server, permissions that are changed on the Access tab of the virtual directory properties on the front-end server are not applied.

Virtual directory metabase permissions can only be set on the back-end server.

Permission changes are not effective if configured on the front-end server, whether or not Exchange System Manager or Internet Services Manager is used.
