Boxes appear instead of text in a Word for Mac 2011 document

You may see boxes where text should be in this scenario:

• You open a document that contains Korean fonts in Word for Mac 2011.
• The document was created on Word for Mac 2008 or Word 2010.

To fix this issue, do this:

1. Open the document that displays boxes instead of text.
2. Select all lines that include boxes.
3. On the Word menu, click Preferences.
4. Under Output and Sharing, click Compatibility.
5. Click Font Substitution.
6. Choose the Gulim font (under Substituted font), and then click OK.

This occurs because the default Korean font (Malgun Gothic) used in Word 2008 or Word 2010 is not used in Word 2011. When you open the document in Word 2011, it tries to substitute the font and chooses one that contains different characters (Arial Unicode MS).
