Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 and Interaction with Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

Summary

With the release of Small Business Server (SBS) 2011 Essentials, a new level of integration between MultiPoint Server 2011 Premium and SBS 2011 Essentials is supported.

The following features require Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 Premium edition which supports Domain Join functionality.

  1. MultiPoint Server Premium supports joining the SBS 2011 Essentials Server.

MultiPoint Server 2011 can browse to http://mySBS2011server/connect and join as a client computer. As the MultiPoint administrator on one of the local sessions, open the server /connect page and click the “Join this Windows PC.”

  2. Domain users can login to the MultiPoint Server 2011 Premium Server

Once domain joined, the MultiPoint Server allows all domain users to log in as standard users.  This includes local sessions or Remote Desktop sessions. This can essentially render the Users tab of MultiPoint useless to you, but now manageability of users from inside the Small Business Server 2011 dashboard is fully supported.

  3. MultiPoint Server 2011 appears in the SBS 2011 Essentials Server Dashboard

Within the SBS Dashboard, the MultiPoint Server is present along with other clients which appears online or offline depending on the state of the server.

  4. SBS 2011 Essentials supports backup/restore of MultiPoint Server 2011

The MultiPoint 2011 Server is backed up and treated as ia client computer.  This is the *only* Server operating system that can be backed up by the SBS 2011 Essentials backup engine.

  5. MultiPoint Server appears in the Remote Web Access of SBS 2011 Essentials
The MultiPoint 2011 server automatically appears in the Remote Web Access for SBS 2011 Essentials, and users can connect directly to this server remotely. Using the SBS 2011 Essentials dashboard, control of user access to the computer is performed by the user properties object.

  6. Users have access to the SBS 2011 Essentials Server Launchpad

Once joined to the SBS 2011 Essentials Server, users logging on to MultiPoint Server 2011 will have access to the SBS 2011 Essentials Server Launchpad and all its functionality including access to Backup information, Remote Web Access, Shared Folders and the SBS 2011 Essentials Dashboard.

With all of the features, management of connections via USB, remote sessions using either thin/zero clients, remote computers, or legacy desktop computers  will offer a Windows 7 desktop experience.
