MPIO does not log path failure events in the event log on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You encounter one of the following issues when you connect a storage device that is controlled by the Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) feature to a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer.

Issue 1
Assume that you set the MPIO feature to fail over mode. Then, an application performs I/O operations on one of the standby paths. When a different standby path fails and then is restored, the MPIO feature does not log any events in the event log.

Issue 2
Assume that you set the MPIO feature to round-robin mode. When a standby path fails and then is restored, the MPIO feature only logs an event for the restore operation in the event log.

Note When a standby path fails, two events are logged in the event log. One event is logged when the failure occurs and the other event is logged when the standby path is restored.

Cause

This issue occurs because the MPIO feature does not log an event when a standby path fails because of a Plug and Play (PnP) event.
