FIX: Access violation when you use the ICryptoTransform.TransformFinalBlock API to perform a cryptographic operation in a .NET Framework 3.5-based application

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5-based application on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The application passes a zero-length byte array to the ICryptoTransform.TransformFinalBlock API to perform a cryptographic operation. For example, you use the API to encrypt or decrypt data.
In this scenario, the application crashes. Additionally, an error message that resembles the following is logged in the event log:

Cause

This issue occurs because the ICryptoTransform.TransformFinalBlock API does not handle the zero-length byte array parameter correctly in the .NET Framework 3.5-based application. Therefore, this results in an unhandled Access Violation exception, which causes the application to crash.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix if .NET Framework-related files are not being used.

File information

The global version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
