The removal of an update takes longer than expected in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are using a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You uninstall an update for an application that uses the Windows Installer (MSI) technology.
  • The application was installed or repaired from a network share.

In this scenario, the removal process may take longer than expected. For example, you may wait for several hours before the update is uninstalled.

Cause

This problem occurs because Windows Installer has to access the original installation source when it tries to uninstall the update. If the original installation source cannot be accessed, such as during a network outage, Windows Installer waits for a time-out on each file before the removal process can continue. If the original installation source contains many files, the update removal may take a very long time.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
