FIX: A .NET Framework 3.5-based WPF application is not displayed correctly when you use RDP to connect to a Windows 7 computer

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that has the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installed.
  • You use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to remotely access the computer.
  • You try to run a .NET Framework 3.5-based Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) application on the remote computer.
In this scenario, the WPF application is not displayed correctly. For example, the WPF application only has a border, and the body of the application is not displayed.

Notes
  • This issue typically occurs if a computer has two NVidia graphics cards and drivers for the two graphics cards installed.
  • This issue only occurs if you use RDP to remotely access a computer that is running Windows 7.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework on a computer that is running Windows 7:
  • The .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • The .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix if the affected files are being used.

We recommend that you close all .NET Framework applications before you apply this hotfix.

Workaround

To work around this issue, you use one of the following methods:
  • Uninstall the NVidia drivers from the computer.
  • Remove one of the NVidia graphics cards from the computer.
  • Migrate the WPF application from the .NET Framework 3.5 to the .NET Framework 4.
