Symptoms

You may receive error "anytime upgrade failed. Go online to resolve the issue" when run Windows Anytime Upgrade (WAU) from Windows 7.

Cause

This issue happens due to partially installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. Some Service Pack components are still remained in the system.

Workaround

The upgrade should complete successfully after removing the partially installed Service Pack 1 from the System.

To remove Service Pack 1:

Open an elevated Command Prompt window.

On 32 bit system: input below command: 
Dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17105 

On 64bit system: input below command:
Dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514 

Dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.1.17514

More Information

Windows Anytime Upgrade (WAU) is a method to perform upgrade from a lower edition of Windows 7 to a higher edition of Windows 7. Windows Anytime Upgrade isn't available in all editions of Windows 7, such as Windows 7 Ultimate edition.
