FIX: Visual Studio 2010 SP1 IDE stops responding when you start an application in debug mode after you open Test View or Test List Editor

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a multi-project solution on a computer that has Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed.
  • You open the Test View or Test List Editor tab, and then you run a unit test.
  • You try to start an application of the solution in debug mode.
Note This issue typically occurs when the solution contains a test project and a combination of the following project types:
  • Web application project
  • Silverlight project
  • Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) project

In this scenario, the Visual Studio 2010 SP1 IDE stops responding. Additionally, an error message that resembles the following is logged in the event log:
System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException occurred
Message=Unspecified error (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004005 (E_FAIL))

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Visual Studio 2010 SP1 installed.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply the hotfix if the affected files are being used. We recommend that you close all instances of any Visual Studio applications before you apply this hotfix.
