To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
Step 1: Remove CREATOR OWNER from All Files and Folders in the Web Content Area
When FrontPage attempts to install the server extensions to a web,
and then encounters the CREATOR OWNER permission requirement, FrontPage impersonates this account during the installation. FrontPage uses the CREATOR OWNER account with only List access. Therefore, when FrontPage attempts to write to the registry, the error message appears because FrontPage no longer has access to write to the registry.
Step 2: Uninstall FrontPage Server Extensions
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel dialog box, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- In the Add/Remove Program Properties dialog box, click the Install/Uninstall tab.
- Click Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions or Microsoft FrontPage 98 Server Extensions, and then click the Add/Remove button.
- Follow the instructions to remove the software.
Step 3: Delete the Web Server Extensions Registry Key
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
- In the Registry Editor, locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions
- Select the Web Server Extensions key, and then click Delete on the Edit menu.
- Click Exit on the Registry menu.
Step 4: Assign Permissions on the Content Folder and Buffer Folder
- Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
- Browse to select the content directory.
- Right-click the content directory, and then click Properties on the Shortcut menu.
- In the Properties dialog box, click the Security tab, and then click the Permissions button in the Permissions pane.
- Click the Add button in the Directory Permissions dialog box, and then add the groups Administrators and System with Full Control.
- In the Directory Permissions dialog box, click to select the Replace Permissions for Subdirectories check box, and then click to select the Replace Permissions for Existing Files check box.
- Click OK in the Directory Permissions dialog box.
- Click OK in the Properties dialog box.
- Browse to select the buffer folder.
- Right-click the buffer folder, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
- In the Properties dialog box, click the Security tab, and then click the Permissions button in the Permissions pane.
- Click the Add button in the Directory Permissions dialog box, and then add the groups Administrators and System with Full Control rights, and the accounts Interactive and Network with List rights.
- In the Directory Permissions dialog box, click to clear the Replace Permissions for Subdirectories check box, and then click to clear the Replace Permissions for Existing Files check box.
- Click OK in the Directory Permissions dialog box.
- Click OK in the Properties dialog box.
Step 5: Install FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions.
