FP2000: "Error 2 opening registry key" When You Open Web on Local Computer

Symptoms

When you attempt to open a Microsoft FrontPage web on your local computer, you may receive the following error message:
Server error: Error 2 opening registry key Software/microsoft/shared tools/web server extensions/ports/port 80

Cause

This behavior can occur if the Web Server Extensions key and its subkey do not have the correct type of access rights assigned to them.

Resolution

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type regedt32 in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. In the Registry Editor, locate the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions
  4. Select the Web Server Extensions key, and then click Permissions on the Security menu.
  5. In the Registry Key Permissions dialog box, verify that the groups Administrators, System, and Everyone have the Full Control access rights assigned to them. To change the type of access for a group, follow these steps:

    1. Select the group, for example, Administrators.
    2. In the Type of Access box, select the type of access that you want.
  6. Click OK in the Registry Key Permissions dialog box.
  7. Assign the Full Control access right for each subkey of the Web Server Extensions key.
