The PIN dialog box does not appear or you are presented with all the certificates in the store when you try to access a WebDAV server in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you try to access a Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) server on a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. The WebDAV server requires certificate authentication. However, you encounter one of the following issues:
  • If the certificate is stored on a smart card and if the authentication process requires a personal identification number (PIN), the PIN dialog box does not appear and the connection fails.
  • If the certificate is stored on a file server, a dialog box displays all the certificates in the store instead of only those certificates that are suitable for client authentication.

Note You can access the WebDAV server if you select the correct certificate in the dialog box.
Note This issue occurs only if the application that you use to access the WebDAV server uses the WebClient service. For example, you use Windows Explorer or SharePoint designer to access the WebDAV server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following hotfix on the computer.

Note The hotfix does not support scenarios in which the cryptographic service provider (CSP) does not allow the PIN to be transferred programmatically.

Third party CSP's are also required to respond to the function call CryptGetProvParam() (s. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms938119.aspx ) for PP_IMPTYPE with CRYPT_IMPL_REMOVABLE.

By default, the Certificate Trust List Filtering feature is installed and enabled after you install the hotfix. The Certificate Trust List Filtering feature filters the certificate choice UI presented to users by querying the certificate trust list from the server then filtering the client authentication certificate choice UI to only show certificates that whose issuers are in the trust list presented by the server. You can disable this behavior by setting the DWORD value of the following registry key to 0:
HKLM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\WebClient\\Parameters\\EnableCTLFiltering
By default the Automatic Cert Selection feature is installed and enabled after you install the hotfix. The Automatic Cert selection feature automatically selects the appropriate client authentication certificate from the certificate store if there is only a single client authentication certificate in the store. You can disable this behavior by setting the DWORD value of the following registry entry to 0:
HKLM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\WebClient\\Parameters\\EnableAutoCertSelection

Hotfix information

Additionally, the dates and the times may change when you perform certain operations on the files.
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes
Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
    VersionProductSR_LevelService branch

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
