How to move a Web to a different computer in FrontPage 2000

This article describes several methods of moving Webs from one computer to another. There are several methods that you can use to move a Web from one computer to another, depending on the connections between the computers. Choose the method that best matches your situation.

Between computers that are visible on a network

To move Webs from one computer to another computer that is visible on the network, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft FrontPage 2000 on the source computer.
2. On the File menu, click Open Web, select the Web that you want to move, and then click Open.
3. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
4. Click Options, and then click Publish all pages, overwriting any already on the destination.
5. To specify the location where you want to publish your Web, type the address of the new location in the text box, or click Browse, and then move to the new location on the destination computer.
   • For example, if you type http://NewComputer/MyWebs, MyWeb will be created on the destination computer as a sub-web.
   • If you want the Web that you are moving to be the root Web, omit the following text:/MyWebs.
6. Click Publish.

From an Internet or an intranet site that is running FrontPage extensions

To move your Webs from an Internet or an intranet site that is running FrontPage extensions, follow these steps:

1. Start FrontPage 2000 on the destination computer.
   
   On the File menu, click Open Web.
2. In the Open Web dialog box, in the Look in text box, type the location of the Web that you want to move, or click Browse, and then move to the Web on the Internet or on the intranet.
3. Click Open.
4. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
5. Click Options, and then click Publish all pages, overwriting any already on the destination.
6. To specify the location where you want to publish your Web , type the address of the new location in the text box, or click Browse, and then move to the new location on the destination computer.
7. Click Publish.

Between two computers that are not connected by a network

To move a Web between two computers that are not networked, use one of the following methods.

Use the Publish command

To use the Publish command to move your Web between computers that are not connected by a network, follow these steps:

1. Start FrontPage 2000 on the source computer.
2. On the File menu, click Open Web, select the Web that you want to move, and then click Open.
3. Insert a blank disk in the floppy disk drive (drive A).
4. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
5. Click Options, and then click Publish all pages, overwriting any already on the destination.
6. In the text box where you specify the location where you want to publish your Web, type the letter of the floppy disk drive.
7. Click Include subwebs, and then click Publish.
8. When you are prompted to convert this folder to a Web, click Yes.
9. When FrontPage 2000 has finished copying the files to the floppy disk, take the disk to the destination computer and insert it in its floppy drive.
10. Start FrontPage 2000 on the destination computer.
11. On the File menu, click Open Web.
12. In the Look in text box, select 3 1/2 Floppy (A:), and then click Open.
13. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
14. Click Options to reveal the options, and then click Publish all pages, overwriting any already on the destination.
15. To specify the location where you want to publish your Web, type the address of the new location in the text box, or click Browse, and then move to the new location on the destination computer.
    
    Note If the Web is the root Web on the old computer, it may be best to publish it to a subweb first. Otherwise, you must take the whole file structure or you may lose some important folders.
16. Click Publish.

Use Microsoft Windows Explorer

To use Windows Explorer to move your Web between computers that are not connected by a network, follow these steps:

1. Insert a blank disk in the floppy disk drive (drive A).
2. Start Windows Explorer on the source computer, and then locate the folder that contains your Web.
3. Copy the folder to the disk in drive A.
4. Remove the disk, and then insert it in the floppy disk drive of the destination computer.
5. Start Windows Explorer on the destination computer, and then copy the folder (Web) or the individual files from drive A to a folder that you created for the new Web in the destination computer's server folder.
6. Start FrontPage 2000.
   
   On the File menu, click Open Web.
7. Select the folder where you just copied the files, and then click Open.

Use the Import command

You can use the Import command to move a Web, either by importing it through the network or from a folder on a floppy disk that you created earlier.

Note Using the Import command will only import the pages that are visable to a Web browser. None of the FrontPage 2000 Web components (for example, navigation structure, shared borders, Web parameters and settings) will be imported.

To use the Import command to move your Web between computers that are not connected by a network, follow these steps:

1. Start FrontPage 2000 on the destination computer.
2. On the File menu, click Import.
3. In the Import dialog box, click From Web.
4. In the Import Web Wizard - Choose Source dialog box, select the option to import from a source directory of files on a local computer or on a network.
5. Type the location of the Web that you want to move or locate the Web that you want to move so that the Web's address appears in the Location text box.
   Click Include subfolders, click Next two times, and then click Finish.

FrontPage 2000 imports the files to the current Web.
