System Shuts Down After Modifying Critical Battery Notification Level Policy on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

You have a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 system.
You modify the percentage of battery capacity in Critical Battery Notification Level policy under Local Group Policy Editor.
The system shuts down unexpectedly when the specified percentage is displayed.
When the system is shut down, all applications currently running are closed and the following message is displayed in the System Event log:

Event ID: 6008
Source: Event Log
Type: Error
Description: The previous system shutdown at Time on Date was unexpected.

Cause

Event ID: 6008 being logged is by design. The default action taken is to shut down the system if you only modify the Critical Battery Notification Level policy and you do not modify the Critical Battery Notification Action policy.

Resolution

If you do not want event ID 6008 to appear when the battery reaches the percentage level that you selected in the Critical Battery Notification Level policy, then you must select either Hibernate, Sleep, or Take no action in the Critical Battery Notification Action policy.

Important note In Windows Server 2008 R2 and in Windows 7, the power management services no longer perform a graceful shutdown of the system when a system loses power and runs on battery power when the default setting on the Critical Battery Notification Action policy is set to Shut Down. At a minimum, if you change this policy to Take no action, Sleep, or Hibernate, you would still be able to have event logging to determine whether the system is now running on battery power together with the option to initiate a graceful shutdown at a predetermined time.

The Critical Battery Default Notification Level policy user interface noted below informs you to configure the Critical Battery Notification Action policy to set the desired action.

Critical Battery Notification LevelSpecifies the percentage of battery capacity remaining that triggers the critical battery notification action. To set the action that is triggered, see the Critical Battery Notification Action policy setting. If you disable this policy setting or do not configure it, users can see and change this setting.

As noted in the Critical Battery Notification Action user interface below, you can choose one of the following items:

Take no action
Sleep
Hibernate
Shut Down

Critical Battery Notification ActionSpecifies the action that Windows takes when battery capacity reaches the critical battery notification level. Possible actions include Take no action, Sleep, Hibernate, and Shut Down. If you disable this policy setting or do not configure it, users can see and change this setting.
