TF14045: The identity [Team Project Collection Name]\Project Collection Build Service Accounts is not a recognized identity

Symptoms

A Team Foundation Server 2010 administrator may get the following error while modifying the version control security permissions:

TF14045: The identity [Team Project Collection Name]\Project Collection Build Service Accounts is not a recognized identity

Cause

The issue happens when there are team projects with the same name as their containing team project collection.

Resolution

Rename the team project collection to a different name.


To rename a Team Project Collection:

1. Launch TFS Administration Console and select "Team Project Collection" node.

2. In the list of team project collections, select the collection that you want to rename and click on "Stop Collection" on the "General" tab.

3. Give a status (reason) for stopping the collection and then select "Stop".

4. The stopped Collection will appear as "Offline".

5. Click on Edit Settings. This will display the "Edit Team Project Collection Settings" dialog window. Change the name of the collection. The SQL Server Instance and Database name should remain same. Click "Save".

6. Click "Start Collection" to bring the collection online.
