FP2000: Cell Contents in Excel Worksheet May Not Be Displayed Correctly in Web Browser

When you save a Microsoft Excel worksheet as a Web page and view it in your Web browser, cell contents such as text, objects, and formatting may not be displayed correctly. Column widths and row heights also may not be displayed correctly.

This behavior occurs because Microsoft Excel writes the tab-layout:fixed tag into the table to maintain cell integrity.

To identify and resolve these problems, follow these steps:

1. In FrontPage, on the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the Configure Editors tab, and clear the Open web pages in the Office application that created them check box.
   
   NOTE: Clearing this check box allows the pages that were created in Microsoft Excel to be opened and edited in FrontPage.
3. Click OK.
4. In FrontPage, click Replace on the Edit menu.
5. In the Find what box, type table-layout:fixed.
6. In the Replace with box, type table-layout:auto.
7. Under Search options, click to select All pages and Find in HTML.
8. Click Find in Web.
9. After the web is searched, the list of occurrences appears at the bottom of the dialog box. Double-click the first page, and then click Replace All.
10. After the page is edited, a dialog box appears, asking you to save and close the current document and then click Next Document.
11. Continue clicking Next Document until all documents have been edited.
12. After all documents have been edited, return to the Configure Editors tab (click Options on the Tools menu), and select the Open web pages in the Office application that created them check box.

To prevent these symptoms from occurring, do one of the following:

Manually set the column widths wide enough to display the widest entry before you save the worksheet as an HTML document in Excel 2000.Set column cells as "wrapped text" in Excel 2000.When you use a title for your table, merge the cells along the top of your table. Then format the text to right align, left align, or center align.If you are using FrontPage 2000, right-click the Microsoft Excel file in FrontPage, and then click Open with FrontPage.NOTE: If you open the file in Microsoft Excel to make changes (this is the default behavior), the table-layout:fixed tag is written back to the file.
