"0x000000C2" Stop error when you insert removable media or a removable storage device into a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You run applications or services on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The applications or the services call the CM_Get_Device_ID_List function and the CM_Get_Device_ID_List_Size function at the same time in different threads.
  • You insert removable media or a removable storage device into the computer.
In this scenario, you may receive the following Stop error message:
STOP 0x000000C2 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
BAD_POOL_CALLER
Notes
  • The parameters in the Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "0x000000C2" Stop errors are caused by this issue.

Cause

This issue occurs because the partition manager (Partmgr.sys) does not provide a synchronization mechanism for an internal structure when more than one I/O request packet (IRP) accesses it at the same time. This behavior causes the structure to be freed two times. When a second thread tries to free the structure after it has already been freed, the Stop error message that is mentioned in the Symptoms section is generated.
