SignTool does not sign an AppX application package that is larger than 4 GB in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you try to use the SignTool command-line tool to sign an AppX application package on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. However, if the AppX application package is larger than 4 gigabytes (GB), the signing operation fails. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
SignTool Error: ISignedCode:: Sign returned error: 0x80030001
SignTool Error: An error occurred while attempting to sign: path\filename

Cause

This issue occurs because the SignTool command-line tool uses the CFileStream class to implement the IStream interface for file handling. However, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 currently limit the maximum size of a file stream to 4 GB.
