Performance Monitor data collector set does not collect all required performance counter data in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a user-defined data collector set in the Performance Monitor window on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You select the Create manually (advanced) option and the Performance Counter option to create data logs.
  • You click the Add button to add performance counters.
  • You select all the performance counters and all the instances for multiple performance objects at the same time, and then you click the Add >> button.
  • You start the data collector set.
In this scenario, you may experience the following issues:
  • It shows "\<object name>\*" on the Which performance counters would you like to log page. The expected value is "\<object name>(*)\*".
  • Some performance counter data is not collected.

Cause

This issue occurs because some instances under some performance objects are not enumerated correctly. Therefore, they are not added to the data collector set.
