Proquota.exe uses incorrect profile quota Group Policy settings in Windows Vista, in Windows 7, in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
    • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
    • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
The computer is a member of a domain.
  • You configure users to apply multiple Group Policy objects (GPOs) when they log on to the domain from the computer. For example, domain level policies, organization unit level policies or local computer policies.
  • These GPOs contain the following Group Policy, each with a different setting:
    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\User Profiles\Limit profile size
In this scenario, the Profile Quota Manager tool (Proquota.exe) may receive incorrect profile quota settings. This behavior causes data loss if the incorrect quota size that is actually applied is too small.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Profile Quota Manager tool (Proquota.exe) has a hard-coded time limitation (2 seconds) to wait for Group Policy processing. If Group Policy processing does not finish within 2 seconds, the Proquota.exe process reads the profile quota size without waiting for the final quota size information.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
